DB Cargo UK is upgrading: ETCS advances rail freight transport of the future.
DB Cargo UK is taking a decisive step towards digitalised rail: together with Siemens Mobility, the company is starting the retrofitting of nine Class 66 locomotives with the European Train Control System (ETCS). This marks the start of the first phase of a national programme that aims to equip all locomotives in this series with the innovative technology in the long term.
Digitalisation for greater efficiency and safety
The modernisation project is a central component of the East Coast Digital Programme, which is intended to future-proof the British rail infrastructure at a cost of £1.4 billion. This involves replacing the conventional signalling system with a modern digital cab signalling system that displays all relevant information to train managers directly in the driver's cab. Siemens Mobility is responsible for the development, integration and installation of the Trainguard 200 onboard technology in this project. This technology will make it possible to operate the East Coast Mainline - the most important railway line between Edinburgh in Scotland and London - without conventional signalling. This is an important step towards more efficient, safer and more reliable rail communication and represents a milestone in the modernisation of the UK rail network.
Conversion at Toton depot - completion by 2026
The work on the locomotives will be carried out at Toton traction maintenance depot in the East Midlands and is due to be completed by March 2026. At the same time, DB Cargo UK is investing in modernising the infrastructure on site. This will include the installation of a new load bank, a modern washing facility and bridge cranes. In addition, modern accommodation will be provided for the Siemens team to ensure optimal conditions for everyone involved.
Jon Harman, Head of Asset Management and Maintenance at DB Cargo UK, emphasises the importance of the project: "This investment will secure the long-term growth of our sector. It will create much-needed capacity for freight transport while improving the safety and reliability of the rail network."
Rob Morris (Siemens Mobility) and Emily Woodward (Network Rail) also emphasise the importance of the collaboration and the innovative power of the programme, which is paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable railway in the UK.
With this project, DB Cargo UK is once again demonstrating its pioneering role in the industry - and paving the way for modern, digital and efficient rail logistics in the UK.
