Today we are introducing the business unit Liquids and Bulk, one of the four business units in the Rail Logistics division (Management Board member Pierre Timmermans).

Liquids and Bulk (chemicals, mineral oil and bulk ware)

The business unit Liquids and Bulk specialises in Europe-wide transport and logistics solutions for the chemical and mineral oil industry as well as for the building materials and fertiliser industry. It designs and realises integrated logistics solutions with rail at their heart from a single source.

The business unit Liquids and Bulk also realises intermodal transports with tank containers door-to-door.

Our hazardous goods experts in the chemical and mineral oil sectors, who have been operating as DB Cargo BTT GmbH since 1989 and today ensure smooth transport with 150 employees at the Mainz, Düsseldorf, Halle and Hamburg sites, form part of the new business unit. In 2023, more than 11,000 block train shipments, almost 250,000 single wagonload consignments and 70,000 containers in CT networks were transported for DB Cargo BTT's customers. Innovative rail logistics solutions for future topics, such as hydrogen logistics or the transport of CO2 as part of Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage, are also part of the range of services.

Bulk transports include large-volume bulk ware that is predestined for rail transport. With special freight wagons, this part of the new business unit Liquids and Bulk offers Europe-wide solutions for the fertiliser industry, the building materials sector and the energy industry. This connects our customers' production sites with harbours, power plants and transhipment points. In total, Liquids and Bulk owns and manages over 7,500 freight wagons, 700 tank containers and over 90 locomotives, including leased EuroDual dual-mode locomotives.

Torsten Lüders, Head of the business unit Liquids and Bulk

Torsten Lüders heads the business unit and is Managing Director of DB Cargo BTT GmbH. He has held various management positions at DB Cargo for over 20 years. A total of six teams are responsible for the design, calculation, marketing and strategic development of block train, shuttle and single wagonload transport services.

The focus is on customised, tailor-made rail logistics door-to-door solutions by rail – classic or multimodal – and sometimes also by road if necessary.

Liquids and Bulk management structure

Sales and Solution Design Bulk: Develops and markets Europe-wide rail-based logistics concepts for customers in the fertiliser, building materials and energy sectors and supports them in their industrial transformation.

Sales and Solution Design Chemicals: Connects chemical clusters throughout Europe with individual transports, develops complete solutions and cross-modal door-to-door concepts and guarantees the highest safety standards in the handling of dangerous goods.

Sales and Solution Design Mineral Oil: Connects refineries and tank farms in Europe in compliance with the highest safety standards. The focus is on block train transport and other logistics services such as plant shunting services and tank farm logistics, management of loading and unloading slots and fleet management.

Sales Support Liquids and Bulk: Supports the sales teams with calculations, tenders and strategic tender management.

Equipment Liquids and Bulk: Responsible for equipment management (freight wagons, containers and locomotives) as well as optimising freight wagon equipment and availability.

Development and Excellence Liquids and Bulk: Analyses the core markets, develops the business unit strategically, is responsible for the procurement of rail and logistics services and transport quality.
