Article: Ried railway renovation completed: DB Cargo tackles logistical tasks

DB Cargo supported the refurbishment with diversions and logistics solutions for freight transport.

The Riedbahn is one of the busiest railway lines in Germany. During the general refurbishment from July to December 2024, it was completely closed - until it reopened on 15 December. DB Cargo played a key role during this time: by efficiently rerouting freight trains and supplying materials to the construction site, the rail freight company supported the refurbishment and ensured supplies to the companies along the route.

The challenge of the Riedbahn redevelopment

The general refurbishment of the 70-kilometre-long line involved extensive work, including the replacement of tracks, points and signalling systems. During this time, around 8,000 freight trains were routed safely and efficiently via diversionary routes. In addition, DB Cargo ensured the reliable supply of customers along the closed route with 400 service runs - a logistical feat that kept operations running even under difficult conditions.

Focus on construction site logistics

DB Cargo played a crucial role in supplying construction sites. Over 43,000 tonnes of ballast were delivered precisely and on time - a key prerequisite for the extensive renewal work. The close coordination between DB Cargo, the construction partners and the customers ensured that both the construction site and the associated companies could be reliably served despite the line closure.

  • 8,000 trains were successfully routed via diversionary routes.
  • 400 service runs supplied customers along the closed route.
  • 43,000 tonnes of ballast were delivered to the construction site on time.

Looking ahead - benefits for freight transport

With the reopening of the Riedbahn, not only passengers but also freight transport will benefit from the modernised infrastructure:

  • More stable operations: by replacing the old and using the new modern equipment, disruptions of operations are reduced by up to 80 per cent.
  • Higher capacity: The modernised line enables more efficient and reliable freight transport.

Riedbahn as a pilot project for the future

The Riedbahn refurbishment was a pilot project as part of Deutsche Bahn's refurbishment programme. The experience gained will be incorporated into the planned refurbishment of other important railway lines - a step forward for rail freight transport in Germany and Europe.
