Article: The UK's first climate-friendly freight terminal in Cricklewood sets new standards
An innovative step towards an environmentally friendly future
A milestone for sustainable logistics
Rail freight transport is efficient and sustainable - but what happens when there are no more tracks at the destination? This is where the "last mile" comes into play. It ensures that goods reach their destination reliably despite the lack of tracks. But how does it work in practice?
DB Cargo UK has realized a pioneering project in Cricklewood, North London: the first climate-friendly Rail Freight Terminal in the UK. This location is essential for the environmentally friendly transport of building materials and waste to and from the British capital. By shifting freight transport to rail, London's congested roads will be relieved and emissions sustainably reduced - because rail transport causes around 80% less CO2e than truck transport instead.
Environmentally friendly innovations at a glance
In addition to low-emission rail logistics, DB Cargo UK in Cricklewood is focusing on a variety of innovative environmental measures to further improve the site's carbon footprint:
Green noise barrier: An 18-metre-high, planted noise barrier reduces noise and dust while providing a habitat for birds and insects.
Reforestation and renaturation: Nine different native tree species were planted and fallow land was converted into ecological habitats to provide shelter for wild bees and other animals.
Water management: A modern system for reusing surface water significantly reduces water consumption.
Renewable energy: The site is powered entirely by REGO-certified renewable power.
HVO biofuel: The use of Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil (HVO) has reduced Scope 1 emissions by 98 tons of CO2e per year.
Efficient machines: Fuel-saving machines such as the Volvo L180H Wheel Loader significantly reduce diesel consumption.
Circular economy: The reuse of office units has saved 40 tons of embedded carbon.
A flagship project with a future
Stacie Scullion, Sustainability Manager at DB Cargo UK, explains: "We've been talking about the environmental benefits of moving freight by rail for years, but the way we operate our sites means we can make an even bigger contribution to the UK meeting its carbon reduction targets." The terminal in Cricklewood serves as a model for future climate-friendly logistics sites in England, Scotland and Wales. With this project, DB Cargo UK is setting new standards for the combination of efficient logistics and environmental responsibility.
