Article: DB Cargo strengthens maritime combined transport
Efficient and sustainable rail logistics for sea freight in Europe.
DB Cargo has reorganised itself: The Management Board departments at DB Cargo are no longer organised by function, but are now divisionalised with a clear focus on customer requirements. Within the two Management Board divisions of Rail Logistics and Combined Transport (CT), small units responsible for results have been created, one of which we would like to introduce to you in this article: maritime combined transport.
Maritime combined transport plays a crucial role in DB Cargo's sustainable logistics. Tailor-made transport solutions connect European seaports with important industrial centres - efficiently, reliably and environmentally friendly.
Seamless logistics solutions for sea freight
Under the leadership of Frank Erschkat as Head of "CT Maritim" and Spokesperson of the Board of Managing Directors of the subsidiary TFG Transfracht , the specialist for port-to-door logistics offers comprehensive solutions for shipping companies, freight forwarders and original consignors. The main leg of the transports is carried out by environmentally friendly rail, while pre- and on-carriage is organised flexibly by truck. TFG Transfracht, together with the newly established production capsule "Operations Maritime", takes over the entire process chain - from sales and conception to the operational realisation of the transports. DB Intermodal Services complements the offering with important services in the areas of depot, warehouse and terminal services as well as the first and last mile by lorry.

The new organisational structure of maritime combined transport at DB Cargo shows the business units and their management.
TFG Transfracht: Specialist in seaport hinterland logistics
With its AlbatrosExpress network, TFG Transfracht (TFG) links six European ports with 26 terminals in four countries. Every year, around one million TEU are moved sustainably by rail in over 15,000 connections. Week after week, 260 container trains travel between the seaports and the most important economic regions of Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Frank Erschkat (Spokesperson of the Board of Managing Directors) and Thomas Hesse jointly form the management of TFG in a dual role.
Optimisation of rail transport by Operations Maritime
Punctual and reliable train traction is made possible by the encapsulation of production and the "strong long-haul driving" train driver deployment model. Encapsulation of production refers to the dedicated allocation of resources, such as train drivers and locomotives. With around 260 employees, including numerous train drivers, the maritime production capsule headed by Sören Kaminsky ensures efficient planning and operational execution of transport operations.
DB Intermodal Services: More than just transport
DB Intermodal Services (DB IS) complements the offering with important services relating to the container being carried. With over 300 employees and under the management of Thomas Hesse and Michael Heinemann, DB Intermodal Services operates eleven empty and loaded depots throughout Germany as well as a transhipment terminal in Kassel. Together with partner companies and terminal holdings, DB IS also offers its service portfolio at six other locations in Germany. The range of services is supplemented by container repair, cleaning and trading.
With the new structuring and orientation of maritime combined transport, DB Cargo is focusing on an economical and efficient transport solution that optimises the flow of goods between European ports and industry. Our customers benefit from innovative logistics solutions, specially tailored to their requirements.
