Article: DB Cargo's Control Tower: the centrepiece of customer communication and network control

The Control Tower manages Europe-wide transport operations with precision and commitment every year - a look behind the scenes.

Punctuality, reliability and flexibility - these are the pillars on which DB Cargo organises rail freight transport for its customers throughout Europe. At the centre of this control system is the Control Tower (CT) based in Duisburg.

This is where all the threads come together: The team coordinates the traffic of hundreds of thousands of trains per year around the clock, ensures smooth processes and is the first point of contact if there is a problem somewhere. The Control Tower not only manages the day-to-day transport business, but is also the link between customers, infrastructure and operational implementation.

Focus on customer orientation - every day

The Control Tower takes care of all the customer's day-to-day operational concerns and is responsible for the order-to-cash process:

  • Provision of empty trolleys: The Control Tower ensures that trolleys are available where they are needed.
  • Train routing and network control: Every transport concept is monitored - delays are recognised early and alternative solutions are found quickly.
  • Direct communication: customers are proactively informed and supported in the event of deviations and malfunctions.
  • Special traffic: Whether additional volumes at short notice or special requirements - the Control Tower flexibly integrates special trains into the network.
  • Close coordination with infrastructure partners - for smooth transitions and maximum route utilisation and with a focus on the main European transport corridors (rail freight corridors)
  • Efficient and powerful order and billing management

The goal: maximum transparency, fast solutions and smooth transport.

Control Tower at a glance: Convincing figures
  •  2 million orders per year - reliably controlled, day and night
  • Coordinating 400,000 trains a year across Europe - getting them to their destinations punctually and efficiently
  • 45,000 special trains per year- flexibly integrated whenever customers need additional capacity
  • 100,000 adjustments every year - quickly implemented so that the network remains stable even in the event of short-term changes
