Article: DB Cargo makes single wagonload transport fit for the future

Viability for the future of efficient rail logistics

DB Cargo is repositioning itself to make single wagonload transport more reliable, economical and sustainable. The single wagonload network is a central pillar of DB Cargo and rail freight transport in Europe, especially for industries such as steel, chemicals and automotive. It also connects sidings in Germany and Europe for smaller groups of wagons and individual wagons.

With a new management structure, clear responsibilities, dedicated resources and an improved network, we are making the single wagonload more efficient for our customers.

Optimization is achieved by improving the use of resources focusing on the stability and resilience of the network.

Important changes:

•    Compression of traffic in long-distance routes to increase frequency•    Stabilization of the network through encapsulated resource circulation •    Increasing resilience in the network by introducing flexible routing•    Improvement in planning reliability through increased maturity fidelity

Sustainability and future security

With the new structure, DB Cargo is not only increasing operational efficiency, but is also actively contributing to the decarbonization of transport. Single wagonload transport makes it possible to save large amounts of CO₂ emissions and shift truck transports to rail.

The realignment is an important step towards making the single wagonload network economically viable and securing environmental benefits for our customers.
